Hyperbaric oxygen increases blood flow and oxygen delivery to body tissues helping with healing. The benefits of oxygenation in fighting cancer cells are plentiful but there is more to hyperbaric oxygen therapy than increased tissue oxygenation alone. Increased blood delivery to tissues means increased delivery of whatever the blood carries such as immune cells and chemotherapy medications. The benefits of hyperbaric oxygen in cancer care can be summarized in the following points:
- Enhances immune activity against cancer cells
- Enhances the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiation
- Expedites healing following surgery
- Counteracts the low oxygen environment in which cancer cells thrive
- Helps clear infections (a frequent complication of cancer and chemotherapy) through oxygenation and immune cell delivery
